It has been known for many years that eating fresh fruit is good for your health. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) food pyramid recommends eating a variety of fruits as part of a balanced diet. According to the USDA, fruit provides nutrients that are vital for health and maintenance of our body and people who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Eating fresh fruit has been known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. If eaten as part of a balanced diet, eating fruits rich in potassium may also reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and may help to decrease bone loss. Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. Fruit also has no cholesterol.
Each fruit consists of natural nutrients which provide different health benefits. Strawberries and citrus fruit like oranges and lemons are high in Vitamin C which builds healthy teeth and gums and helps maintain strong blood vessel walls. Apricots and peaches are known to contain Vitamin A which helps bone and tooth development and maintains healthy skin and membranes. Apples are a great source of dietary fiber and are an important source of potassium which helps to decrease the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels. Pears and blueberries are also a great source of natural fiber and Vitamin C.
The USDA recommends eating up to two cups of fruit daily as part of a balanced diet. The amount of fruit you need to eat depends on age, sex, and level of physical activity. Visit www.mypyramid.gov for more information on the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
